introduction
http://sncorocks.blogspot.com
It's our time to shine.
St. Nicholas Chinese Orchestra (SNCO) started off in 1992 with a few individuals interested in certain instruments. Initially, there were only dizi and pipa classes.
Gradually, the interest spread to many and a few enthusiastic girls sent a proposal to the principal Mrs Hwang-Lee Poh See to start allow a chinese orchestra to be set up
as a co-curriculum activity, backing their plan up with the reason that St Nicholas was a chinese school. From the small handful of 30 odd students, our orchestra has
expanded to its current 100 odd members.
Some of the orchestra’s key objectives are to promote the awareness and appreciation of Chinese music, as well as to promote and exchange of ideas and experience among
musically-oriented institutions and individuals. We also felt that there was a need to take an active interest in the civic, cultural and general welfare of the Chinese and wider
community.
SNCO has been invited to perform in several functions and occasions. Recently, we performed in “Promenade” and “Fluid Fusion”, 2 productions of our school. We also went
out of the country to take part in a competition and clinched a gold. Combinations with Raffles Institution Chinese Orchestra and Kebun Bahru Chinese Orchestra have also
allowed us to show our talents.
Under the guidance of our teachers, instructors and the baton of Mr Liu Bin, a renowned composer and conductor, the orchestra has been steadily improving. SNCO is also
continually working to develop the group's repertoire and technical capabilities, to foster new audiences, as well as recruit and train new members.
Mr Liu Bin studied composing and conducting under Professors He Zhan Hao and Xia Fei Yun at the Shanghai Consevatory of Music, graduating with top honours in 1984.
In 1992, he obtained his Masters degree in Music Analytics from the Paris Conservatory of Music and settled in Singapore, working as the Artistic Director for NAXOS
Singapore and composing works for Chinese orchestras and events in the region. He has lectured at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts and continues to be a music educator.
In 1998, he established his company -Liu Bin Cultural Arts- and was awarded the Artistic Excellence Award by the Composers and Authors Society of Singapore in 2001.
He is currently the President of the National Theatre Club of Sinapore and a member of the Association of Composers (Singapore).

star of the week JINGYI
Hi I’m Jing Yi from Dizi section! I am currently in Secondary 2. Some things I like to do are
listening to music, chatting online and watching TV! I usually listen to English songs and
(Ok actually I watch all types of shows) but I like watching shows from channel 8 shows
and hongkong shows! I’m generally ok with reading books and somehow I will feel a sense
of accomplishment when I finish reading a book! That’s about all!
everyone PLEASE send in your descriptions to sncorocks@gmail.com!

As we've said before, it'll be best if you could take the NUS exam because you'll have a certificate to prove your proficiency in an instrument and it will be beneficial if you wish to DSA. And we'll also be testing grading songs during future RSCs so since you have to practice those songs anyway, it'll make more sense if you can take the examination! Furthermore, the discounts if you sign up now are pretty large, they range from about $20 for lower grades to $50 for grade 8. And you won't have to worry anymore about not having any sectional songs to play because you can always use your grading songs if you really have no time to learn new songs.
Heys SNCO! This is the final and updated interview schedule and please inform Joanne if you still cannot make your designated timings. Punctually is key and please do not be late. Once late, you would have to wait for an empty slot. We have a tight schedule so please do not cause any delays.
Thank you.
Place: Toa Payoh East CC
Dress Code: Casual clothes, please do not wear school uniforms and strictly no FBTs.

Please note: NO CCA this thursday and friday.
Following students with interviews this thursday, 26/5/2011 @ 12.45pm, CO Room:
Must type it very large. Okay, CO please sms your instructors to thank them for putting in all the effort to coach us through this whole SYF period okay! (: Jubilate is coming up soon in about 1 month time, hope that we will be able to master yao2 zu2 by then and perform a blast! It will be the last Jubilate for the white badges so we hope it will be a very memorable one^^ I think most importantly, through this SYF we have shown liu lao shi and other ppl that location doesnt matter. We may be very poor, lousy facilities, even lousier instruments, but we'll still perform very well :D
Many people will be going to Jubilate so we musnt allow any criticism okay! SHUI3 ZHI1 SHENG1 & YAO2 ZU2 FTW! (even though they arent very fantastic songs but yea~!)
"圣尼格拉女中 CHIJ ST. NICHOLAS GIRLS' SCHOOL, GOLD WITH....AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!"
THANK SO MUCH FOR THE EFFORT PUT IN!
We all know that the stress experienced by everyone here was exceptionally great this year since we all know that when we perform, we were no longer doing it for ourselves. We were doing it for theschool, for liu lao shi, for the teachers, for the seniors! Here, i would really want to thank EVERY SINGLE ONE OF YOU, be it a performer or not! The effort put in in practising, the time sacrificed, the recess skipped, the frequent gastric pains, ALL THAT WE HAVE GIVEN TO SNCO, will never be forgotten and will be remembered by everyone else.
We worked this out together as an ORCHESTRA, not an individual, not a section or an ensemble! The credit of this wonderful achievements goes to EVERY MEMBER! without anyone from a section, the whole orchestra would start to panic, and we would all start to question our abilities. All these are because we are so used to making music altogether, as a whole 120-strong group.
Remember how we started out in a secondary one classroom with only pipa, liuqin, zhongruan, dizis and suonas?
Remember the panic attacks when liu laoshi screamed as us?
Remember the times we groan when liu laoshi says "chun jiang" and the "omg"s when he says "shui zhi sheng"?
Remember the silence and the pale faces when huo laoshi conducts?
Remember the hairspray which stinks up the room?
The bus that was so late we wanted to hack the driver?
The shaking on stage when you realised that IT WAS IT?
The TENSION when the results were announced from the first school?
The momentary BLANK OUT when the emcee reached "No. 42...."?
THE HYSTERIA WHEN THEY READ OUT OUR RESULTS? (which was - as expected - covered by screams and tears)
Tonight, we made history, we made what we believed in HAPPEN!
Up till now, i am still living in a state of disbelief, and a load of withdrawal symptoms.
BUT HEY, WE DID IT! WE REALLY DID IT!
As the saying goes " When ST NICKS is at her best, NO ONE comes close".
THIS is how true it is.
The school as come up with activities for all for the next few days, but even so, please do find some time to practise!
Firstly, let's hope that the GREY BADGES will have fun during their leadership camp! :D
(NOTE: bring loads of plastic bags and insect repellent and ANTI PESPERANT!)
Anyway, for those who are reading this post, PLEASE DO click "others" from the menu up there (^), and then watch all the videos of our seniors performing!
THAT is the standard that we have to surpass!
LOOK at how they moved!
LISTEN to how well they performed!
If we all are able to move as much as Yishan does, Aesthetics wouldn't be a problem!
要动,就要一起动!
想一起动,就该敢敢的动!
Most of you may find it embarrassing now, but what is more embarrassing is when our failure lies in our movement for SYF!
When we move, we tell the others what it means to feel what you play.
When we play, we show them what music is.
When we perform, we let them know who we are.
I guess you all have heard what Huo laoshi said a few weeks ago, and even with common sense, you guys should know what follows next in the comment.
We are not coming here for CCA to make the song sound like it's of a silver standard, but here to make it of a GOLD WITH HONOURS's standard!
So please work hard everyone!
Don't let the hard work of ours, the teachers', instructors' and 刘老师's go to waste!
ANYWAY,
We(enzymes) have been improving nowadays! (probably due to the increased pressure)YAY! :D:D:D
But also do take note of what our seniors told us today, yea?
Let's all MOVE MORE and PLAY WITH MORE FEELINGS!!!
PLEASE please do go listen to the recording of our set piece that we have forwarded to all of you so that you all will know where to improve! (especially principal instruments of 2nd movement, guzheng, erhu solo players)
If possible, do save the file into your phone so that you can refer to it during CCA! (hoping that we didn't editted it and relay it for nothing ): )
Commendations for today:
TANBO!!! LAXIAN!!! CELLOBASS!!!
"Life without music would be a mistake" Everyone! WORK HARD!
For the upcoming recess practice which will start tomorrow, we will need all your FULL CO-ORPERATION!
Here's the Job Scope:
Sec1s: Help to move in the big instruments of your own section from CO Store Room (double bass, cello, guzheng, zhong yin sheng) into CO/ Band Room and arrange them in dazu format and also arrange the chairs. As for yangqin girls, the instrument is in the CO Room, so you will just need to move it to its position. For those whose sections do not have any instruments that need to be shifted, please help to arrange the chairs for your own section. For girls under percussion, do help other sections to arrange the chairs (esp. cello bass as most of them will be moving their instrument.
*NOTE:
Sec 2s and Sec3s: After practicing with the instruments, leave them in the room!
Sec 4s: Please keep the instruments after practicing, if not, come back after school to keep if there's not enough time (which is probably the case).
If you cannot take part in the practise due to official reasons, please inform your various Student Conductors!
Thank you!
We all know that we NEED to practice MORE! (like seriously...)
THEREFORE,
We are here to present to you MORE PRACTICE!
I'm ready, I'm ready, I'm ready....!
March Holiday Practice
Other than the original Thursday and Friday practices, we have an extra Holiday Practice (only for SYF members):
Date: 14 March
Day : Monday
Time: 2.30 - 6.30 pm (2.30 - 3.30 pm group practice without conductor. 3.30 - 6.30 pm group practice)
Term 2 Practices
When school reopens, there will be sat practices on every sat instead of alternate sat. The sat practice timing will also be extended. Consent form will be issued to you all soon.
Day : All sat when school reopens in Term 2
Time: 10.30 - 1.30 pm. (10.30 - 11.30 pm group practice without conductor. 11.30 - 1.30 pm group practice)
Let's work it out TOGETHER, and ACHIEVE OUR DREAMS!
Here's the information for tomorrow's interaction with HCICO:
1. Attire - Report in CO TEE, SCHOOL PE SHORTS, and PINAFORE (with name tag)
- For games, we will only be in our PE SHORTS and CO TEE (NO SLIPPERS except for mass game)
2. Reporting - Please report before 9.00am, at SALT Centre of Hwa Chong Institution.
- There will be ushers at the "3rd bus-stop" at 8.45am to bring those taking public transport in.
3. Things to bring:
Instrument (Except for percussion, doublebass, guzheng, yangqin)
Extra clothes (Towel, socks, clothes, PLASTIC BAG, and you-know-what(s))
Water Bottle (AT LEAST 1 litre)
CONSENT FORMS (for those who forgot to bring it today/ sec 3s)
4. Protect yourself at all times! Go in pairs to washrooms and inform your group leaders if you are leaving the group!
5. Don't forget to EXCUSE YOURSELF from water games if necessary.
I found today's practice not bad but dont forget to move okay! Within sections, try to move together, only then can we move together as a CO. It is very weird if like some move, some dont move, or some move a bit, some move alot. So its all about synchronising. The judges for SYF will be sitting somewhere at the middle/top, so it is very clear to them how we move, and our every actions. Also, please remember to sit properly with your hands/legs at the proper place even though it is not your to play. Put your heart into the music when you play and feel HAPPY while playing:D
Okay, all the best for our practices to come and hopefully, we will be able to get GWH for SYF!
CA1s are officially over for all! (except for those with third lang...)
Since the exams are over, there should be quite some SPARE TIME, yea?
Do use them to practice, and take breaks in between practices as we humans get bored after doing the same thing after a while...
If it isn't perfect, there shouldn't be a reason for not practising!
Everyone needs to work hard as an individual before the pieces can sound nice as an orchestra!
Playing solo beautifully is hard, playing melodiously in a group is even harder, so everyone...
LET'S WORK HARD TOGETHER!
We have all worked in thousands of group projects and worked closely as a class for class decoration competition. Just this time, for this 2 months, can we work together as a CO? just for this 2 months at least?
2 months is not long, we have already been through 2 and a half months of 2011. It's the last sprint left! do it as ONE!
as many of you would have realised, there is this flu and sorethroat bug going around the school, so please do drink more water and take care of yourselves! Sleep early as well!
The next practice is this coming THURSDAY! hopefully, we will be able to make full use of the practice, yea? :D
CCA is like studying chinese. Good results come from years and years of practice, not just reading the few chinese lines for the text book twice a week :)
Hey CO! Hope you guys have enjoyed your 3-day holiday!
Just for your entertainment, these are videos found on youtube of people playing BUMBLE BEE with Chinese Orchestral instruments!
Do take a look at all and hopefully comment about them on the TAGBOARD! (it's there for a reason!)

They would be playing songs like: 1. Super Mario Brothers Theme Song 2. Nobody 3. 赛马 4. Dizi solo 5. Percussion Ensemble <>
and many many more CNY songs! (:
All of you are encouraged to go so as to gain more exposure from external COs in preparation for SYF and also to know more about other COs. If going, have fun! (:
If you all have time, please do visit the tab "others" for our old videos!
This is specially directed to Secondary Fours and Threes this year as you all have had experiences in playing those songs before, especially yue er gao and chan ge.
Then, it seemed so boring and stale to us after having played it countless times.
Now, listening to it again, it sounds beautiful, right?
Always practice the pieces like they are new ones, that it is something new every time you play it, and may you understand how the audiences will feel listening it for the first time!
This is the seating arrangements for Chinese New Year..
Sec Ones - please take note of the number of chairs you need to take for your section. If there are alot of you in your section, do help Daji move their instruments too. Each section must at least have a copy of this. If possible, print one for yourself :)
- Take note that all sections need chairs except for Double Bass and Daji.
For the upcoming Regular Skills Check, here are the reporting timings for different sections:
Section

As we will be finishing all examinations in one day, please do be punctual!
The pieces that will be tested are the Journey and 水之声, and do practice the whole song as you will be given a random excerpt of the song to be tested on that day itself!
For those who are unable to make it on Saturday, you will have to produce a parent's letter or an MC to excuse yourself, and inform your SLs of your absense by this Wednesday, 26/1/11. Also, there will be a RSC make-up session on Tuesday, 3.15pm, at CO/ Band Room.
Here's the video of 迎春接福 sung by a child prodigy singer back then in the 1900s!
Hope this video helps you in memorising the scores! (it's not that hard for this song, actually)
